You don't have to go far to find good fresh water fishing in Sussex County. I've listed thirty of the most popular ponds here and I'm sure I've missed a few.
All ponds and lakes in Delaware are manmade; there are no natural inland bodies of water. As such, they tend to be very shallow with an average depth of only 3- feet. Most of these ponds started as millponds that were created years ago to harness the power of the creeks and streams that ran to the bay. At one time there were 130 millponds in Delaware but only about 60 remain. A few, like Cedar Creek, Red Mill, and Abbott's, still have the old mills standing. Abbott's Pond now houses a nature center that is open to public.
Here's a list of my favorites. Where possible, I've included useful information like directions, whether or not there is a boatramp, and some general fishing tips. Contour maps are available for some ponds and are indicated by an asterick in the listing. If you have interesting information about a local pond that you would like to share, please email me at gene@cedarcreekgeneralstore.com. I'd love to include it here.
